George Washington the soldier, stateman, and patriot was born at Bridges Creek (now called Wakefield), in Virginia on February 22, 1732. In 1789 he became the first president of the United States of America (from 1789 to 1897. He died at Mount Vernon on December 14, 1799. In accordance with his wishes he was buried in the family vault in the hill-side at Mount Vernon, overlooking the Potomac river.
